NutMag 7: Inheritance
In 2008, George Town (along with Melaka) was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its “cultural diversity embodied and embedded in living heritage and built heritage”. To mark the 15th anniversary of this designation, our NutMag theme for 2023 is “Inheritance”.
How do we define heritage—by lineage, geography, community? Or do you see the history of the universe as the history of yourself? Do you believe in Faulkner’s “The past is never dead. It's not even past” or are you more inclined to L.P. Hartley’s “The past is a foreign country: they do things differently there”?
Whether it be an object, a value, a place or a skill—interpret "inheritance" as literally or as metaphorically as you wish. Write about what gets passed down or what gets lost: genetic traits, trauma, heirlooms, wisdom, wealth.
Send us your fiction, non-fiction, or poetry about the things, habits, dreams, and languages that we inherit, whether from our family or the wider cultural landscape.

Blog Submissions
You can now submit your short stories, creative nonfiction, and reviews (up to 1,000 words) and poetry (up to 20 lines) for our blog.
There's no submission deadline or theme for this; entries will be read on a rolling basis, probably once a month. Any selected pieces will be posted at a rate of once a month as well. If you do not hear back from us within 6 weeks, we probably won't be posting your piece, sorry.
There's also no payment for this, except the pleasure of having your work up on our site.
