milestones: a 10th anniversary anthology
NutMag celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2025 ... so we're producing another anthology!
A milestone was a stone beside a highway to mark how far you are from or to a certain important location. These days, we use "milestone" to refer to an important event in anything you're tracking: a project, your life, your career, and community!
We'd love to read about milestones big and small, good or bad, that have changed the trajectory of events - whether in the real world or in a fictional one. Tell us about real or imagined coming-of-age rituals, career and life achievements, or even the turn of a nation.
Notes on place/setting:
You can set your fiction and poetry anywhere and anytime you like, including (but not limited to) alternate history Penang, Penangites in space, mythological Nusantara. Even though we'd love to see familiar names and places, we'll consider any setting as long as YOU have ties to our state.
If you're writing creative non-fiction, your piece will have to be related to or set in Penang in some shape or form.

Submission guidelines:
- Writers must be based in or from Penang. We're bringing back our "Honorary Penangite" status for this one, so if you think you should be an Honorary Penangite, be prepared to convince us! (Eg: you lived here for more than 10 years, your parents are Penangites and you come back every single CNY or Raya or Thaipusam or whatever, etc.)
- We accept submissions in English and Bahasa Malaysia.
- The max word count for fiction and creative nonfiction is 5,000 words.
- The max length for poetry is 60 lines.
- You may submit all your best works! However, only one piece will be selected per writer.
- Deadline: 30 April 2025
MYWriters Penang looks to acquire non-exclusive worldwide English rights to publish the anthology online digitally and in print in Malaysia. This is a PAID anthology. Our current rates are RM100 for poetry and RM200 for prose (TBC).

In your application, tell us:
- who you are (a brief bio)
- where we can see your previous works (this could be a link to your art blog, or your school assignments, your Instagram - anything that shows us your art style!)
- your rates for a black & white piece, approximately A5 portrait or A6 landscape.
- Do look at our recent NutMag covers and the illustrations in Home Groan to see what we like!
- The illustrations commissioned will be based on the selected written works. The timeline for this is estimated to be between July to August 2025.
Blog Submissions
You can now submit your short stories, creative nonfiction, and reviews (up to 1,000 words) and poetry (up to 20 lines) for our blog.
There's no submission deadline or theme for this; entries will be read on a rolling basis, probably once a month. Any selected pieces will be posted at a rate of once a month as well. If you do not hear back from us within 6 weeks, we probably won't be posting your piece, sorry.
There's also no payment for this, except the pleasure of having your work up on our site.
