NUTMAG 9: DUALITY
Island and mainland, sun and moon, good and evil. Dualities help us make sense of the world and ourselves, so it’s no wonder that they're one of the most basic building blocks of storytelling.
This year, tell us about the dualities that define you and the narratives that defy them. Spin us tales of polar opposites, or both sides of the same coin. Split your poetry right down the middle; alternatively, pen an essay from two different perspectives (unfortunately, you can’t co-write it).
Send us your works of duality, divisive or unifying. We prefer the niche to the clichéd, but we'll leave the door open if you'd like to surprise us. ✌

Submission guidelines:
- Writers must be based in or from Penang.
- We accept submissions in English and Bahasa Malaysia.
- The max word count for fiction and creative nonfiction is 2,000 words.
- The max length for poetry is 60 lines.
- You may submit all your best works! However, only one piece will be selected per writer.
- No AI works, please and thank you.

MYWriters Penang looks to acquire non-exclusive worldwide English rights to publish the zine online digitally and in print in Malaysia. We'll be selecting 10 pieces this year to be in our annual chapbook! Token payment (currently RM20) will be made for all accepted works.

Are you an artist looking to expand your portfolio? We're looking for a new cover artist this year! Apply by 31 May 2026.

- who you are (a brief bio)
- where we can see your previous works (this could be a link to your art blog, or your school assignments, your Instagram - anything that shows us your art style!)
- a short pitch (this can be any thoughts about what you might do for the cover, why you are the best cover artist ever, or whatever other ways you think will best convince us to select you. DO NOT SEND US ANY FINISHED WORK.)
- Token payment will be made upon publication. You'll be credited on our site and in the zine.
- We will make the selection in June, and will need the completed cover by September.
- Do look at our recent covers to see what we like!
Blog Submissions
You can now submit your short stories, creative nonfiction, and reviews (up to 1,000 words) and poetry (up to 20 lines) for our blog.
There's no submission deadline or theme for this; entries will be read on a rolling basis, probably once a month. Any selected pieces will be posted at a rate of once a month as well. If you do not hear back from us within 6 weeks, we probably won't be posting your piece, sorry.
There's also no payment for this, except the pleasure of having your work up on our site.
